Purpose
To characterise friction and wear in sliding contact with variety of contact geometries.

Description

This equipment characterises sliding contact between two samples over a wide range of test parameters. The contact could be.

Point : Ball-on-balls, Ball-on-disc
Line  : Cylinder-on-disc
Area : Pin-on-disc, Washer-on-flat

A range of adapters is available to hold various sample geometries. Upper sample is mounted on a rotating shaft. The lower sample is non-rotating. It is pressed on to the rotating sample with test load. The frictional torque developed is measured with a torque cell. Test load, speed of rotation, test duration and temperature can be varied. Test can be run either dry or lubricated. Lower sample can be heated.

Standards
ASTM D 2266
ASTM D 4172
  Customized procedures.

Features
Automated testing.
Dry or lubricated test under controlled temperature.
Easy onsite re-calibration.
Records break away friction and kinetic friction.

Instrumentation
Test load is applied with dead weight. It is measured with a load cell mounted under the lower sample. Pneumatic loading is optional. With this, loading schedule can be preprogrammed for step or ramp increase of test load during a test run.

Test speed is measured and displayed.
Compound wear of the samples is measured with a displacement sensor. It records upward movement of the lower sample holder due to wear.

A PID controller maintains lower sample temperature.
Frictional torque is measured.
A programmable timer shuts-off the machine after preset duration.

Data Acquisition and Control
Test load, speed, frictional torque, compound wear and temperature are recorded as function of time. These parameters are acquired and displayed on-line. Co-efficient of friction is displayed. Acquired data can be presented in several ways and printed. Results of different tests can be superimposed for comparative viewing. Data can be exported to other software.
